Diving into the Musicals – “Nice Work if You Can Get It” and Sardi’s!

Friday night, June 1st, my husband and I were again treated to a bevvy of calories and feasts of the eyes and ears – dinner and lunches and tickets to three Broadway musicals in a row! First up was a trip back to Sardi’s Restaurant to sit amongst the famous caricatures and eat a good meal with some good Malbec wine. I had the crab cake appetizer, the pork chops, some wine, and said hello to an old friend’s portrait on the way to the women’s room. Malbec and Crab Cakes Pork Chops – a bit dry, but nicely garnishedContinue readingDiving into the Musicals – “Nice Work if You Can Get It” and Sardi’s!

Two Excellent Plays – “The Best Man,” “Clybourne Park,” and Food!

Wednesday night, the plans for the In-Law Invasion went into full swing, as they took us to the French restaurant Marseilles on 9th Avenue before seeing “The Best Man” on Broadway. I had the Hummus Tahini for an appetizer (it didn’t quite live up to The Hummus Place’s delicacies), but the Salmon with asparagus and wheatberry salad was light, healthy (or so it tasted), and very filling. We didn’t even have dessert, since the Scottish Stout beer Pete had (and I tasted) was a meal unto itself! The Hummus Tahini Salmon & asparagus After dinner, we saw “The Best Man,”Continue readingTwo Excellent Plays – “The Best Man,” “Clybourne Park,” and Food!

A week of Broadway

Just a little warning, readers – the in-laws are in town, and when that happens, we see a bunch of musicals and plays in a row along with accompanying dinners and lunches. So, I’ll be posting mini-reviews and experiences on the blog soon! On the docket for this week: The Best Man, Nice Work If You Can Get It, Evita, and Spiderman And coincidentally, I’ve also won tickets for Clybourne Park via Twitter – the How Stuff Works podcast twitter feed (@howstuffworks) was having a contest, and I won tickets for Thursday night!

Audition Psych 101 Workshop with Michael Kostroff – highly recommended

Even the best, professionally-trained actors and singers have mental blocks, issues, worries, hangups, excitements, and passionately discordant thoughts in my/their minds when I/they walk into and out of an audition room. Even Tyne Daly had nerves going into auditions; one day, the assistant casting director told her in the waiting room, “Tyne, it’s a chance to act on a Thursday…” It’s this type of reality-checking advice that Michael Kostroff gives to actors in his “Audition Psych 101” Workshops. Michael Kostroff uses the Tyne Daly quote to illustrate how actors can get out of the mental merry-go-round we/they experience and justContinue readingAudition Psych 101 Workshop with Michael Kostroff – highly recommended

“Your wish, my command” – a gift from Bernie of the MTA System

File this under “silly fun”! A week or so ago, the New York Times posted an article online about the announcements made over the MTA system, and asked others to comment via Twitter (@nytimes) or via the website about what readers would like to hear the MTA subway announcers to say. I jokingly tweeted to @nytimes that I would love it if I heard over the speaker “Have fun at the audition/rehearsal/performance/party, Sierra!” I imagined that would be a great pick-me-up, especially if it’s 7am and I’m on my sleepy way to sign up for an EPA. Well, Bernie WagonblastContinue reading“Your wish, my command” – a gift from Bernie of the MTA System

Mega Update: “City of Angels,” Marquee Five, Definitely Dickens, and the best place *ever* for breakfast.

Here’s an update on what’s been going on here in Connecticut and in New York City! I’m still having a terrific time in East Haddam, performing in “City of Angels.” I had two exciting understudy performances as Donna/Oolie while Nancy Anderson accepted her Noel Coward award, appeared on television singing in The Angel City 4 quartet with “Jimmy Powers,” came back to New York to debut Marquee Five’s CD, “8-Track Throwback” with a CD Release Party/Concert, am about to embark on the thing called the Holiday Season, and ate my weight in breakfast fare at The Whistle Stop Cafe inContinue readingMega Update: “City of Angels,” Marquee Five, Definitely Dickens, and the best place *ever* for breakfast.

First Month at Goodspeed for “City of Angels”…Bop bop ba ba doo wop!

My goodness! A month and a few odd days later, and I am finally getting back to blogging.  I’ve been in East Haddam, CT, rehearsing (and now already in preview performances) for “City of Angels” at Goodspeed Musicals…and what a blast it has been.  Besides rehearsals, computer problems, understudy line memorization, and Hurricane Irene, it has been a busy time!  The show itself is musically demanding and with roughly 20 scenes per act, the technical process last week was a challenge as well.  But the cast is awesome, the set is beautiful, the costumes are fantastic, the orchestra (an 8-pieceContinue readingFirst Month at Goodspeed for “City of Angels”…Bop bop ba ba doo wop!
